Growing up, Jonatan Amastal learned to take pride in his immigrant roots. Born in Mexico and brought to the United States at age seven, he experienced firsthand the challenges of rebuilding a life in a new country. His family’s early support from nonprofit organizations shaped his deep appreciation for community resources and the role they play in helping families thrive. As a first generation college graduate, Jonatan understands the hurdles of navigating higher education without a roadmap. This fuels his commitment to mentoring college students through the CO+HOOTS Entrepreneurship Program at Benedictine University, where he helps emerging founders strengthen their confidence and vision. Jonatan is the founder and creative director of Azteca Graphics, a design agency rooted in cultural authenticity and community storytelling. Guided by the belief of “bridging division through design,” his work amplifies voices that are often overlooked and helps build stronger, more connected communities. After attending PLAN events and seeing their impact on individuals navigating journeys similar to his own, Jonatan is honored to support an organization that offers the guidance and belonging he once wished for. In his free time, he enjoys collecting physical movies, playing video games, and hyper fixating on new hobbies.
What does reimagining immigrant justice mean to you?
Reimagining justice means transforming systems of oppression by creating spaces where people can share and discuss their experiences openly. It means recognizing that we are all simply “human beings, being human in the world,” and that such opportunities reveal how, even when we come from different places, we all strive for the same hopes and goals. By sharing resources that individuals may not have known about or had access to, we help ensure that everyone has the chance to pursue a better life without barriers holding them back.
