Last week, Trump became president again and he immediately issued orders attacking the immigrant community, especially undocumented immigrants. This is a scary moment for many in our community, but we want to encourage you to not panic, but instead get INFORMED and PREPARED to protect each other. Knowledge is power.
Key Change Under Trump: Last week, Trump ordered the expanded use of a process called "expedited removal." Undocumented community members are now at great risk of being put in a rapid deportation process without the right to appear in front of an immigration judge or fight their case. This guide explains this change and how you can best be prepared to protect yourself in case you come into contact with immigration agents. English/Spanish
We Can Protect Each Other: There are more of us than there are of ICE and police officers. Working together, we can protect ourselves.
- If you see ICE in your community (and please make sure it is ICE by checking the name on their vehicle etc) call the Puente Rapid Response Hotline at 480-506-7437. For Mexican citizens, the consulate also has a 24hr hotline: 602-330-3642.
If you are a citizen or lawful permanent resident and can be safe, consider also doing the following:
- Shouting loudly "La Migra" or "ICE is here" so other immigrants in your community know they are there and can stay in their homes or get away.
- Record what ICE is doing. You can learn more about how to document interactions with ICE and your rights here. English/Spanish
Know Your Rights: Despite the new changes, immigrants still have many RIGHTS. It is important that you know your rights now so you are ready to advocate for yourself and your loved ones should something happen:
Educate yourself; learn about your rights today:
- Know Your Rights in Arizona: English/Spanish
- Know Your Rights at Home: English/Spanish
- Know Your Rights Near the Border: Your rights are more limited within 100 miles of the border. Phoenix is NOT within 100 miles of the border. Tucson and Yuma are both within 100 miles of the border. If you go to this region, be sure you know your rights. English/Spanish
Stay Connected: You are not alone. We are stronger together, get involved.
Get involved with local immigrant-led organizations like Aliento, the Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC), Haitian-American Center for Social & Economic Development (HACSED), Poder in Action, Puente, Semillas, and Trans Queer Pueblo.
Encourage other people you know to stay connected and informed by joining our community bulletin. Have them text COMMUNITY to 844-478-9583 or sign up by email here.
